National Health Insurance

Entry

In the case that a foreign national stays in Japan and registers him/herself as a resident of Japan but does not work or enroll any health insurance, the person is obliged to enter the National Health Insurance Program. This insurance covers 70% of any incurred medical treatment costs and leaves 30% to be paid by you in the event of injury or illness. A National Health Insurance Card will be issued to you after you successfully join. Make sure to have the health insurance card with you when visiting hospitals and clinics.

Contact the Health Insurance and Pension Division if you are unsure about your eligibility.
