National Pension System

Entry

All persons living in Japan and between the ages of 20 and 59 are required to enter the public pension system. Enter the National Pension System if you have not entered into any other public pension system. Keep the pension book issued upon your entry and be careful not to misplace it.

  • Legal Identification (residence card or Driver's license)
  • Personal seal (your signature is acceptable)

Notification of change

Please submit a notification form immediately in the following cases.

  • When your address or your name has changed
  • When retiring from a job before you reach 60 years of age
  • When divorcing
  • In case of death

Premium

After entering the National Pension System, you are obligated to pay a premium. The premium is a flat rate throughout the nation, but it changes every year, so please contact us. Pay the premium at a bank or a convenience store with the payment notice dispatched from the Japan Pension Service.

Making an “advance premium payment” (lump sum advance payment for six months to one year) is less costly overall than making monthly payments. If your income is less than a certain amount, you may be able to get an exemption. For details, contact the section in charge.

Lump-sum withdrawal payment for foreigners

Lump-sum withdrawal payments are for foreigners who leave Japan before fulfilling the qualifying period of their pension payments. This benefit applies to those who have paid pension premium for more than six months but are returning to their country before their pension matures. Contact us for further information.
