2015 Census in Japan

The Census is held every five years. The next census day will be October 1, 2015.

All residents in Japan are subject to the census.

Foreign nationals who have lived or will live in Japan for more than 3 months are also subject to the census.

There totally are 17 survey items; 13 items relating to household members including gender, date of birth, marriage status, employment status, place of work/school, type of residence, and 4 items relating to households.

There are two ways to answer census questions;  by  answering the census questions online via a PC or smart phone or by sending back a filled out census paper

The census procedure is as follows:

(1)An ID and password for online survey will be distributed to all the households by census takers at the beginning of September. (Period for response: September 10 to 20)

(2)From September 26, census takers will distribute census papers to the households which have not answered to the census online.

(3)Filled-out census papers should be posted during October 1 to 7 by using a return envelop.

It is required by the Statistics Law for everyone to answer the census questions accurately.

All the personal information obtained by the census papers will be well protected.
